And they’re off. From the backstretch seats of Del Mar Race Track I’m on
my dogs yelling at horses, mourning my losses, and making new connections.
Only recently did I join Ad2, but I can already tell it was a wise move. Our
trip began with a group ride to Del Mar, where a series of impromptu trust
falls broke out in the parking lot. When we got to our seats, with beer in hand
we caught a glimpse of Mario Lopez accepting a blanket of flowers for his
horse’s performance. So naturally I thought, “If AC Slater can win, so can I.”

I was sorely mistaken. In fact I discovered I know nothing about horse
racing save for the oversized hats. I must say however that taking a loss has
never been so comfortable. The day was spent chatting, cheering and clinking
glasses with a great group of like-minded professionals. For a newbie to San
Diego and the local advertising scene, I was welcomed graciously and made
some exceptional new contacts. And even though the job hunt looms before me,
I’m liking my odds more everyday.

Ad 2 San Diego’s Public Service Committee announces the launch of their annual public service campaign.

Ad 2 is a national network of young advertising professionals committed to making a difference in their communities through advertising. For over 30 years, Ad 2 San Diego has contributed to the local community by creating a complete advertising campaign for one non-profit organization every year. Their most recent campaign, organized by current and former Ad 2 members, assisted The Challenged Athletes Foundation with their social media strategy. In addition 2 years ago they promoted the Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County’s “Sports Bigs” program. That campaign included bilingual radio and television spots featuring Chris Chambers of the San Diego Chargers and TV personality Dick Enberg. Samples of the work can be found at the link below:

http://www.vimeo.com/bigbrotherssd

By building advertising campaigns in television, radio, print, outdoor and interactive media, Ad 2 SD members strive to positively impact the San Diego community. The Public Service Committee is dedicated to assisting a non-profit organization reach their development and visibility goals. If you feel your non-profit organization could benefit from selection as the 2010-2011 Ad 2 public service partner, please go to the Public Service Page on the Ad 2 SD website to download an application. Applications must be submitted by Friday August 27, 2010 for consideration.

We’ll recognize a few people for their great contributions to the Club and two term Ad Club president Greg Joumas will pass the gavel to our first-ever co-presidents, Melissa Lopez and Jon Bailey.

Then we’ll get to see the legendary work from the Martin Agency … Geico, UPS, Free Credit Report.com and many other brands when Mike Hughes, the latest inductee into the One Club’s Hall of Fame, joins us on the stage for the fourth in our “Evening with …” series. The first three were Alex Bogusky, Jeff Goodby and Dan Wieden and although you may not know the name Mike Hughes, you certainly know his work. Oh … and the Martin Agency was also named U.S. Agency of the Year.

Kudos for Mike Hughes and The Martin Agency Adweek has called Mike one of the nine best creative directors in America. Ad Age, on the other hand, has listed The Martin Agency as one of the three best creative agencies in the world. “Which proves,” Mike says, “that the rest of the agency is a lot better than I am.” Adweek, incidentally, gave a one-word explanation for Mike’s inclusion on their creative directors list: “integrity.”

The San Diego Ad Club appreciates the support of our sponsors. Many thanks to: Clients&Profits, EOS (Electronic Output Solutions).

My tenure as Ad 2 President has officially come to an end. I was the first Ad 2 President to serve a two year term, and we got a lot done! Our membership doubled, we won numerous @aafnational Club Achievement awards, and we hosted a National Ad 2 retreat.

We had some good times as well! The picture above is my favorite. Its from our Kickball Tournament last month. What I’m most proud about though, is the jobs that were created and the business relationships that were formed.

There are numerous individuals and companies who have helped grow Ad 2 the past couple of years. For this article, I tapped into the Twitter API and their new @anywhere feature. I was fortunate to be in the audience at SXSW when Evan Williams announced the feature, and I immediately had the idea to use it for my final Presidents Message.

If you are new to Twitter, or to San Diego in general, this list will give you a heads up of “whose who”. Please hover over their names, and follow them, as they are San Diego’s brightest.

@sheilafoxmark, @garyware, @jakefields, @StephLuvsLogos, @jennzhere, @donson, @heystephanie, @37click, @AaronKahlow, @sandiegoadclub, @ChrisRothwell, @andreasceo, @gearyi, @MEAdigital, @nicolerawski, @boloptimized, @jonjonbailey, @jduimstra, @OMSummit, @fishtanksd, @funktalking, @sabrinafraley, @CandyceCov, @x1fm, @ocadfed, @MarcoB33, @covario, @eisensteinben, @AshleyNPhelps, @sneakjoint, @beckster9, @AndrewDremak, @MayorSanders, @ebayratliff, @cherielisabeth, @jfaris, @leemills, @jennjuckett, @alivegapro, @BareFootCEO, @SabrinaGallier, @mattuch, @TexasKid, @Brewho, @BJ, @MorganGrahamEFM, @vivalastu, @Rachieheather, @RobCorea, @MicheleRB, @TomOkerlund, @seanmonz, @peternudo, @MoonshineDesign

If I left everyone out, it was because we are not connected on Twitter. Greg Joumas, Cindy Saylor, Sara Tovar, Melissa Lopez, Mike Magannis, Carissa Felix, Andrew Mera, Brittany Cook, Dan Foote, Myles McGuinness, Maggie Mariscal, Michael Glass, Scott Smith, Kyle Henley, and Jimmy Stevens are the first to come to mind. They all deserve a special thank you as well. They are “pro’s pros”!

Cheri Reeves, Jenn Baker and Megan Chawathe did a great job as the Ad 2 Presidents ahead of me. Now, to introduce your next Ad 2 President:

Gary Ware! Gary bursted upon the Ad 2 scene in 2008 and quickly rose up the ranks. Gary is extremely bright, having spoke at Marketing Sherpa, Omniture, and OMS events before. He is a leader in the community and will do an excellent job taking Ad 2 to the next level.

As far as I go, I plan on being an Active Past President. I recently got elected to the San Diego Ad Club’s board, so you’ll see me around. I will enjoy the extra time to build my San Diego Online Marketing Agency, BigTuna Interactive though!

Until next time!

P.S. Feel free to follow @ad2sd and myself @adamhermsdorfer while your at it!
