1. Where is your hometown?

I sadly don’t have one specific hometown. I’ve lived all over - East Coast, West Coast, North West and South West. However, Port Townsend, WA was my favorite place – so lets go with that!

2. What brought you to San Diego?

I was previously living in the lovely city of San Francisco, but it was freezing and rent was high. I had heard that San Diego was beautiful, warm, affordable and still had that city feel. I began looking for advertising jobs in the area, and decided to accept the position at Piston. It was a quick move, but I’m super happy I came!

3. What made you join Ad 2 San Diego?

In college I was heavily involved in the Marketing Association and loved what it had to offer. Post college I attended many AMA events, amongst other organizations to keep up to date with latest trends. I definitely wanted to be part of a local industry related organization here, and AD 2 seemed like the perfect fit. Especially after hearing about the Public Service committee position, which I’m especially excited to be a part of!

4. What has been your favorite part as an Ad 2 San Diego Member?

I’ve only attended a couple of meetings so far, but it seems like a great way to stay connected and get involved with the advertising industry in San Diego. Also everyone seems friendly, which is always a perk!

5. If you were granted one wish, what would that be and why?

To get a chance to work with Panda Bears in China. They have been my favorite animal since I was two years old, and getting to work with them would be a dream come true! Plus, I’ve already studied the Chinese, so it would make the experience even better!

Meet your fellow Ad 2 SD member, Nicole Fischer!

Nicole is a graphic designer, originally from Florida, and is currently developing her new business, Roam. Check it out at RoamBrand.com. Nicole is also joining the Communications Committee in the upcoming Ad 2 year as our official designer. Woohoo!

1. Where do you currently work? What do you do there?

I’m currently a freelance graphic designer while developing my own advertising agency, Roam. Roam focuses on the hospitality, travel and adventure industries. Being a big dreamer myself, my goal is to turn dreamers in to doers. I aim for clients who want to inspire consumers to travel the world, dive the oceans and create there greatest memories. I’m in beginning stages of the agency and am seeking my initial clients now. My website is live at RoamBrand.com

2. Where is your hometown?

My hometown is DeLand, FL (between Daytona Beach and Orlando) I went to school at the University of Central Florida and earned a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations.

3. What brought you to San Diego?

In 2011, my now Fiance, was hired to be an aerospace engineer in Chula Vista. We decided to take the leap together and moved across country without even visiting San Diego once. I can safely say it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I worked as a graphic designer for a boutique agency for a year before venturing out on my own.

4. What made you join Ad2?

I joined Ad 2 my first day in San Diego. I was very excited to immerse myself in the San Diego community as well as the professional advertising community. I attended the April happy hour at Miller’s Field and made many connections I still have today.

5. What has been your favorite part of being an Ad 2 SD member?

I would have to pick two favorites. One would be the friends I’ve made at the events, the other would be when I was invited to be the go-to designer for the communications committee.

6. What’re your plans for this summer?

My most immediate plan for this summer (besides launching a business) is summiting Mt. Whitney on July 1st. Mt. Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet.

I am currently a Graphic Designer while I aspire to be a Project Manager or Creative Director in the near future.

1. Where is your hometown?

I currently live in Pacific Beach, CA. However, I was born in raised in a small town by the beach; Fair Haven, New Jersey.

2. What brought you to San Diego?

The consistently warm weather and sunshine brought me to San Diego. I loved growing up by and spending summers at the beach- why limit it to just 3 months?

3. What made you join Ad 2 San Diego?

I was referred by a colleague and Ad 2 San Diego seemed like a great opportunity to meet new people and make connections with the same interests as me.

4. What has been your favorite part as an Ad 2 San Diego Member?

It’s an easy way to get involved in the Design/Ad world. There’s constantly emails flooding my inbox about Events/Seminars/Contests, etc. It’s a great way to keep you updated on what’s going on in your city.

5. Any plans for this upcoming summer?

No big plans other than going home for a week in July to see some friends and family back in New Jersey. Other than that I plan to have a fun and relaxing summer in San Diego- my first one not spent in New Jersey!

2. What brought you to San Diego?

In academia, you go where you get a job. I somehow lucked out and got an awesome job at a wonderful university in this amazing city!

3. What made you join Ad 2 San Diego?

I teach Advertising and Promotion and am the Faculty Advisor for the USD Ad Club, so I try to maintain a network of local experts in the field. This allows me to stay on top of industry trends and also to bring in guest speakers for class and the club. Shameless plug: If anyone is interested being a guest speaker, please let me know!

4. What has been your favorite part as an Ad 2 San Diego Member?

I am new to San Diego and have only been an As 2 member for a couple months, so I have not had the chance to attend very many events. The first event I went to (and my favorite so far) was Mingle Bells. It was cool to see so many people come out and well, mingle!

5. Saint Patrick’s Day is creeping up, what is your favorite way to celebrate?

Hmm, I guess my favorite part about Saint Patrick’s Day is that everyone wears green. I am a huge fan mass color coordination. I’m also excited to see how San Diego celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day. I have heard of a few parades and festivals, so I plan to check those out.

2. What brought you to San Diego?

I left Los Angeles right after high school for an opportunity of a lifetime to work at Z Zone Media. I felt that it was essential for me to gain experience while I attend school so that I can reach my career goals at a younger age. I currently attend Mesa College with plans to transfer to SDSU. I’ve been here for 3 years and I love it!

3. What made you join Ad 2 San Diego?

A Co-Worker of mine told me about Ad 2 and we joined.

4. What has been your favorite part as an Ad 2 San Diego Member?

I loved winning Yoga passes for Mesa Rim during the “Industry Download,” it was my first time winning anything. My favorite part however, is the knowledge that I gained from this meeting. I look forward to attending more events.

5. Saint Patrick’s Day is creeping up, what is your favorite way to celebrate?

I love getting together with close friends, and wearing green is a must!

Event Recap: Ad 2 Industry Download – Powered by MeetSOCI

The bagels were fresh, the coffee was brewing, and Ad 2 Members and guests anxiously awaited the kickoff of the first ever Industry Download. To get things started, Ad 2 President Anthony Miller took to the podium to introduce the first speaker and guest panel. In the audience, attendees tweeted #AD2DL and announced their presence at the event to the Social Media universe. Smartphones highly encouraged.

Sneak Peak: Consumer Insight Development

A self-identified Ad guy, Sterling Doak of the i.d.e.a brand led a frank discussion on Consumer Insight and the process of brand discovery. Creating a new campaign? Altering your strategy? Before the process can begin, he noted the importance of recognizing the psychology behind brand discovery, how best to move people, and learning how to decipher what type of communication resonates with your audience and strikes a cord with them emotionally. As Doak explained, Edward Bernays famously introduced bacon as a staple of an American hearty breakfast, using psychological based techniques to motivate people to incorporate bacon in to their food repertoire. Looks like Bernays really brought home the bacon!

Marketing and advertising consultant Greg Joumas, Eric Hanser of Digital Operative, and Gary Ware of i.d.e.a. manned the guest panel. The three industry professionals discussed particular projects in which consumer insight and behavior truly dictated the way in which the campaign was orchestrated. Learnings were shared from The Invisible Children project, Nike, Intel, and Human Motorcycles (pictured below). Human Motorcycles truly pumped energy in to the Progressive International Motorcycle Show, with the campaign reaching thousands of news sources and fans, taking the “one with the bike” concept to the next level.

Grab your Smartphone! Online Marketing in the Mobile World

Jason Van Peeren of MJD Interactive spoke on the importance of mobile technology, and mobile domination in 2012 and the years ahead. Shortly, mobile will surpass the use of the desktop, with 65% of people currently searching for information on their smartphones each month. Additionally, 68% of mobile users have used a mobile app, and 70% of mobile users participate in social media. For marketers this information is crucial, as everything made for a desktop will need to be built for tablet and mobile.

When creating a mobile strategy, it is important to think mobile. Will you be creating a mobile only website? Will you also be introducing mobile apps and formatting to a responsive design? In terms of mobile apps, smartphone users are often bombarded when they visit the app store. Just for IOS alone 40 billion apps have been downloaded since 2008 (20 billion in 2012) and 20,000 apps are created each month. Instagram famously created their mobile-based app and currently have 90 million active users. The web-based version is available for viewing only. Not everyone can be Instagram, so Van Peeren encourages you to follow these steps before developing your mobile strategy: Take a Baseline Report, Set goals and KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators), Create a Strategy, Recognize the Four Pillars of the Mobile Marketing Funnel (awareness, interest, conversion, advocates), Implement, Report, and Optimize.

Rip-Curl’s Ecommerce Success: Are you ready to ride the Wave?

Far from his beginnings in New York City at GQ, Aaron Cuker discussed the revamp of Rip Curl’s e-commerce platform. He reiterated the focus on Rip Curl’s culture and lifestyle, which are now incorporated in the updated website design and format. Cuker Interactive helped more than double Rip Curl’s online revenues and launched the brand digitally in the United States.

Searching for a wet suit or bathing suit is no easy task. With Rip Curl’s new look, women’s bathing suits are fitted on models, so women have the opportunity to see the suit on prior to purchase. The brand also created a Wetsuit selector, decoding the language of wetsuits for the average person, and created a mobile optimized shopping experience, which could also be used in-store. Cuker listened to consumers and recognized their behavior, creating a user experience conducive to their needs and shopping habits.

I moved to Los Angeles two years ago for a job in advertising and found myself in San Diego at least once a month visiting my college roommate. After two years commuting down to visit I left my job and moved south. I’ve been full time in San Diego since October 2012; I’ve never been happier.

A friend in the industry suggested it would be a great way to network

I joined about a month ago and haven’t attended anything yet, but I’m looking forward to the SAFE party on March 21^st.

Job Title/Aspiring to be: Currently a Staffing Coordinator, but aspiring to be in the Social Media space.

1. Where is your hometown?

I actually have several hometowns – St. Louis, Honolulu, but I spent the majority of my childhood in Vienna, VA, just outside of D.C.

2. What brought you to San Diego?

Just as I was graduating from JMU in 2004, my brother happened to be in the process of moving to California. I decided to join him on his adventure so we packed our cars and road tripped across the country to San Diego. We clearly made a great choice because we have been here ever since.

3. What made you join Ad 2 San Diego?

I discovered Ad 2 San Diego while taking Marketing classes at SDSU Extension and thought I would check it out to meet new people and learn more about the industry.

4. What has been your favorite part as an Ad 2 San Diego Board Member?

Besides the people and events? I have enjoyed learning a lot of new skills that I didn’t have before. Everyone is always willing to help and teach you.

5. What advice can you leave for young members who aspire to thrive in this industry?

The two biggest things I would encourage anyone to do is to continuously learn new skills and network with new people. You never know when either one of those can lead to something great.
