Event Recap – Getting Hired & Sales 101

Ad 2 San Diego enjoying snacks and sandwiches before Getting Hired and Sales 101!

Young professionals in the San Diego advertising industry joined on May 17th at the San Diego Ad Club office for an educational seminar on Sales and Getting Hired. The event started off with snacks of course: delicious sandwiches, chips and salsa, brownies, margaritas and beer. Once full and happy, everybody was eager to learn.

Kevin Drolet of the San Diego Union Tribune spoke on the two subjects. A true pro with tremendous insight; Kevin’s words were too good to miss. In Sales 101, he introduced the Sales V – the guideline to being a person that people turn to in order to make a good decision, rather than a salesperson. Aka Earning the Right. Takeaway point: Honesty is key!
After establishing what makes a good sales person, Kevin moved on with tips of how to sell yourself in Getting Hired 101. There were some obvious recommendations like dressing appropriately and maintaining good eye contact, but he offered many other insights to making a good first impression.
Kevin gave us tips on the best questions to ask in an interview, and why asking questions is key to the success of your interview. Ad 2 San Diego Member, Stephanie Jones, attests to the most important lesson she learned from the workshop, “If you don’t ask questions, it seems as though you are not interested in the company or that you didn’t do your research. Always do your research and ask questions, questions, questions.”
Along with tips about asking questions and conducting oneself in an interview, Kevin made a clear distinction between accomplishments vs. experience, and how a person can be much more compelling by understanding the difference between the two.
It is also extremely important to be prepared for curveballs in your interview like this one, “If you were a Big Mac, what part of the Big Mac would you be?” Seem totally off the subject? Think again! It’s an actual interview question.
Speakers like Kevin Drolet allow us to benefit from their expertise and gain valuable knowledge to be successful in the industry. They give us the tools to be effective, all we have to do is put them to use!
