<p>What made you join Ad 2? &#8211; I&#8217;ve been working in digital marketing for the past 6 years. Since I was new to San Diego, I figured it would be a great way to meet new people and network with people from the same field.</p>
<p>Which Ad 2 event has been most memorable and why? &#8211; All the events I&#8217;ve been to have been great but the most memorable for me would be Mingle Bells. The location, the food, the atmosphere were all great and there was such a great turnout. I met a lot of people that night!</p>
<p>What is your current role in the advertising world? &#8211; I have a digital marketing business called Revault Digital. I have a strong focus on social media which tends to lead to website development as well, as I&#8217;ve discovered a lot of my clients didn&#8217;t have optimized sites both for search and engagement.</p>
<p>Do you have any advice for other members trying to get more out of the Ad 2 experience? &#8211; Yes! Go to every single event you can. Different people show up at each event so you don&#8217;t want to miss an opportunity to network with someone. And you never know if someone is looking for help in something you are an expert in!</p>
<p>You have one Tweet to tell everyone why you love Ad 2, what is it? &#8211; Ad 2 is a melting pot. Each member adds a flavor to the club with their personality &amp; skills and together the results are delicious!</p>

<h3>Background</h3>
<p>For more than 30 years, local Ad 2 chapters have produced comprehensive public service advertisingand marketing campaigns for non-profit organizations in their communities.</p>
<p>The Ad 2 commitment to public service is one of the qualities that sets Ad 2 apart from otheradvertising-related organizations. Each year local chapters select a client, research the client&#8217;s needsand author a complete marketing plan. Then, based upon that information Ad 2 members create television, radio, print, outdoor and interactive advertising elements. Some campaigns also include logodesign, production of collateral materials and public relations initiatives.</p>
<p>These campaigns are not schoolwork. They are not theoretical. They are real, and they make a realdifference in local communities. Scores of non-profit organizations point to the assistance they receivedfrom a local Ad 2 chapter as the key to their development and success.</p>
<p>Each year, Ad 2 chapters compete in a Public Service Advertising Competition, pitting the localcampaigns against one another. Participating clubs submit a written report about their campaign,followed by an oral presentation at the AAF National Conference. A select panel of judges evaluatesthe campaigns and selects the best among that year&#8217;s work.</p>
<p>The winning Ad 2 chapter receives an $800 award from the G.D. Crain Foundation, and the opportunityto present their campaign to all attendees at the AAF National Conference.</p>

<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">An Interagency Working Group of the federal government has released a second version of <a href="http://www.aaf.org/images/public/aaf_content/government/IWG proposed nutrition principles.pdf"><strong>proposed voluntary nutrition standards</strong></a> for foods marketed to children ages 17 and under. This <a href="http://www.aaf.org/images/public/aaf_content/government/IWG fact sheet on food marketing.pdf"><strong>fact sheet</strong></a> released by the Working Group gives an overview of the standards.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">While some aspects of the recommendations differ from the original version, the recommended maximum levels of certain nutrients in foods has remained virtually unchanged. For individual foods, the standards recommend:</div>
<div style="text-indent: -18pt; margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 36pt;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';"> </span></span>1 g or less saturated fat and 15% or less of calories from saturated fat per RACC (reference amount customarily consumed)</div>
<div style="text-indent: -18pt; margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 36pt;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';"> </span></span>0 g trans fat per RACC</div>
<div style="text-indent: -18pt; margin: 0pt 0pt 0pt 36pt;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';"> </span></span>No more than 13 g of added sugars per RACC</div>
<div style="text-indent: -18pt; margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt 36pt;"><span style="font-family: Symbol;">·<span style="font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';"> </span></span>No more than 210 mg sodium per serving</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">The revised recommendations call for a five year phase-in period for the industry to meet the standards (the sodium level is an interim target – with a final target of 140 mg per serving after ten years).</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">The recommendations state that foods marketed to children should provide a “meaningful contribution” from one of a number of specified food groups, but unlike the original version do not specify minimum amounts to be qualified as a meaningful contribution.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">Perhaps the most significant change in the new recommendations is the recognition of the difference between children 11 and under and adolescents between 12 and 17. In its <a href="http://www.aaf.org/images/public/aaf_content/government/FTC Statement on IWG.pdf"><strong>accompanying statement</strong></a>, the Federal Trade Commission acknowledges that the older group is more capable of understanding the intent of marketing and, as such, the recommendations for marketing to them should be narrower in scope, perhaps being limited to in-school marketing and social media.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">Despite these changes, the recommendations remain very troublesome and unworkable. The nutrition standards are so stringent that they would apply to the vast majority of products advertised today – including such items as yogurt, soups and most cereals. There is no current research which establishes a link between marketing of food products and obesity, so there is no foundation to believe that this extreme proposal would work.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">It is still unclear exactly how marketing to children will be interpreted, and hundreds of television shows would likely be affected.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">These proposals are unnecessary. Most food manufactures have joined with the Better Business Bureau to create the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative. Under this self-regulatory program, companies pledge to advertise to children under 12 only products that are consistent with federal nutrition guidelines. Some companies have pledged not to advertise at all to children under 12.</div>
<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10pt;">The Interagency Working Group (IWG) that released these principles consists of the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The first version of the proposal was released in December 2009 with this revision originally anticipated in July, 2010.</div>

The 2010 Public Service Committee has selected their annual partner(s)&#8230; The <a href="http://www.theseanyfoundation.org/" target="_blank">Seany Foundation</a> and <a href="http://safesandiego.org/" target="_blank">S.A.F.E.</a>. That’s right, this year we have selected 2 organizations to receive the help and work of Ad2 and its great members. This means even more opportunities for people to get involved and make a difference with their local community. If interested in joining one of the committees for pubic service or just want more info send us an email to <a href="mailto:publicservice@ad2sd.com">publicservice@ad2sd.com</a> and we will be sure to fill you in on the work and spots we could use some extra hands with.</p>
<p>A little about the partners… SAFE is an organization that many of us might not even know about but is in place to help people like you and I. San Diego Advertising Fund for Emergencies is a volunteer non profit organization dedicated to providing financial aid in life crisis situations to members of the San Diego advertising and marketing communities and their families. The Seany Foundation’s mission is to fund research to help find cures for pediatric cancers, especially sarcomas, and to improve the quality of life for children and teens battling cancer. They are working to ensure that research programs devoted to rare childhood cancers get the funding they desperately need.</p>
<p>Both of these organizations have great missions and great people behind them, if interested in helping either one or both of these committees please email <a href="mailto:publicservice@ad2sd.com">publicservice@ad2sd.com</a> for more info. We are early in the process with both of these organizations and have our first meetings set over the next 2 weeks to introduce the teams, start looking at goals and begin brainstorming our plans for the year. Although its never too late to get involved its a great time to jump on a committee and be there from the start.</p>

<p>Ad 2 is a national network of young advertising professionals committed to making a difference in their communities through advertising. For over 30 years, Ad 2 San Diego has contributed to the local community by creating a complete advertising campaign for one non-profit organization every year. Their most recent campaign, organized by current and former Ad 2 members, assisted The Challenged Athletes Foundation with their social media strategy. In addition 2 years ago they promoted the Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County&#8217;s “Sports Bigs” program. That campaign included bilingual radio and television spots featuring Chris Chambers of the San Diego Chargers and TV personality Dick Enberg. Samples of the work can be found at the link below:</p>

<p>By building advertising campaigns in television, radio, print, outdoor and interactive media, Ad 2 SD members strive to positively impact the San Diego community. The Public Service Committee is dedicated to assisting a non-profit organization reach their development and visibility goals. If you feel your non-profit organization could benefit from selection as the 2010-2011 Ad 2 public service partner, please go to the <a href="http://www.ad2sd.com/public_service/current_campaign/">Public Service Page</a> on the Ad 2 SD website to download an application. Applications must be submitted by Friday August 27, 2010 for consideration. </p>

You’ll get to mix and mingle with the newly elected San Diego Ad Club officers and Board of Directors.  We’ll recognize a few people for their great contributions to the Club and two term Ad Club president Greg Joumas will pass the gavel to our first-ever co-presidents, Melissa Lopez and Jon Bailey.  </p>
<p>Then we’ll get to see the legendary work from the <a href="http://themartinagency.com/"><strong>Martin Agency &#8230; Geico, UPS, Free Credit Report.com</strong></a> and many other brands when Mike Hughes, the latest inductee into the One Club’s Hall of Fame, joins us on the stage for the fourth in our “Evening with &#8230;” series.  The first three were Alex Bogusky, Jeff Goodby and Dan Wieden and although you may not know the name Mike Hughes, you certainly know his work.  Oh &#8230; and the Martin Agency was also named U.S. Agency of the Year.  </p>
<p>Kudos for Mike Hughes and <a href="http://themartinagency.com/"><strong>The Martin Agency</strong></a>  Adweek has called Mike one of the nine best creative directors in America.  Ad Age, on the other hand, has listed The Martin Agency as one of the three best creative agencies in the world.  “Which proves,” Mike says, “that the rest of the agency is a lot better than I am.”  Adweek, incidentally, gave a one-word explanation for Mike’s inclusion on their creative directors list: “integrity.”</p>
