Ad 2 San Diego, PRSA New Pros and the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network joined forces to kick off December with our 4th annual Holiday Party. Big thanks to everyone who came out! It turned out to be a fun event with tons of new people to meet and mingle with.
Thanks to Sidebar for providing a great venue and donating delicious pizza from Ciro’s Pizza! Don’t miss our next Ad 2 event in January to get the New Year started with a bang!
“It’s the First Amendment”
The American Advertising Federation in part with the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) and the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) have filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court challenging a recent law that allows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to restrict tobacco and advertising.
The position of these advertising industry organizations is that the law violates First Amendment free speech. The brief explains how the First Amendment also protects commercial speech.
The brief cites a Court decision in Lorillard v. Reilly (2001), which states that “so long as the sale and use of tobacco is lawful for adults, [there is] a protected interest in communication about it and adult consumers have an interest in receiving that information”. The Lorillard case has successfully struck down a number of advertising restrictions across the county.
Pharmaceutical Advertising Dysfunction
While the U.S. Senate is working on a Health Care Reform bill, a few senators have decided to work on including legislation that would eliminate the deductibility of pharmaceutical advertising.
In 2007 the advertising spend by drug companies was $5.375 billion. If this legislation were to pass, we can be sure that the ad budgets going forward would be drastically cut. The AAF is working closely with a grassroots network of local members to urge the senate to oppose such legislation.

On November 13th we hosted the 2009 Ad 2 Mid Year Retreat at The Dana on Mission Bay. We were joined by 40 Ad 2 members from clubs all over the nation. The event started with a mixer at the Dana on the night of the 13th. The next morning we had an all day workshop which included team building projects, and various breakout sessions. We ended the event with dinner at Las Hadas, and a night of bar hopping in the Gas Lamp District.
This event allowed executives from each club to pick each others brain on topics like public service, member retention, social media, and programs. I felt this expierience was beneficial for myself and my fellow board members, and we picked up some tips that will help us better Ad 2 SD. Check out what some of our other board members had to say.

As the Social Media chair on the Communications Committee for Ad2SD, I was eager to meet other Ad 2 members that shared my position to exchange ideas on two specific areas: (1) how we could better promote our Ad 2 events and (2) encourage other professionals in our areas to join our events.
During our break out session, I learned that other chapters were taking advantage of Facebook and Twitter to promote their events like us. However, I was suprised to learn that other chapter didn’t promote events on their site as often as we did (i.e. Event Announcement, Event Summary, Photos, etc.) but after sharing our success stories with other members, I’m confident that that will change in the future.

The mid-year retreat was a great way for AD2SD to connect with other AD2 clubs across the country. It was the perfect opportunity to share what was working and get advice on things that weren’t. Playing off each others ideas gave us a chance to reflect on our events and programing and how we can improve it to make it even better.

1. How long have you been an Ad 2 member?
3.5 years!
2. Did you do anything fun or interesting this summer? If so, what?
I went on a cruise to Mexico. I try to go on a fun trip or get away every few months. The big trip that is coming up is a trip to Miami and the Bahamas for Christmas and New Years! I can’t wait to spend my “white” Christmas on the white sandy beaches!
3. Why did you join Ad 2? Why did you decide to transfer your Ad2 membership?
I joined Ad 2 to get involved within the advertising, communications and marketing communities. I help my clients build name recognition through selling custom packaging and promotional items- so I figured I could get some new clients and make some friends through AD2. I did just that! I have been on the board the last two years and have enjoyed some committee work. I have made lasting friendships and created valuable client relationships while partaking in all AD2 and SD Ad Club has to offer!
4. Why did you get involved with the board?
I got sucked in! And Jen and Cheri took me to Albuquerque, New Mexico (of all places) for an Ad Club conference and amongst all the alcohol and food intake, they must have snuck in the Ad Club kool-aid!
5. What’s the best thing about Ad 2?
The relationships we are creating now as young professionals are rock solid. We are steps ahead of many in that we will be able to support and grow these relationships for many years to come, which then attribute to us becoming very well known and successful in our industry. Another BEST thing about Ad2- the happy hours and events- we’ve got great programming and great people; always a fun time when partaking in AD 2 festivities!
