One of the greatest advertising gurus of our time: Mr. Dan Wieden, Co-Founder of Wieden+Kennedy. I couldn’t have been more excited to arrive at University of San Diego’s campus last Thursday night. The view from the Joan B. Croc Institute of Peace and Justice was beautiful and it was well suited for this event. As everyone filtered in and enjoyed a few appetizers and beverages, the evening started off with a nice reception before Dan made an appearance. As it grew closer to “presentation time,” Dan decided to mingle with the attendees as he made his way around the premise and spoke with clusters of people. continue

Andrew Mera
Search Marketing Manager
Covario, Inc.
Prior to becoming an Ad2SD member, Andrew Mera was a frequent attendee at Ad2SD happy hours and events. Andrew realized the immediate value that the club had to offer and become an official Ad 2 San Diego member in May 2009. Soon after, Andrew became the Ad2SD Communications Chair and is responsible for four committee members.
When asked what Andrew enjoyed most about Ad2SD, he responded, “First of all, the people. I like working in collaboration with the Ad 2 team and the fact that we’re in the same age range and have things in common, makes Ad2SD even more enjoyable. Secondly, the club is run with a “Do it Yourself” approach. I get to own projects from inception to fruition and I get the opportunity to be as creative as I can be.”
In addition to building his leadership experience, Andrew is a big fan of the Ad2SD events. “From panel discussions, marketing training, access to OMS, and social events – it all makes the club truly diversified,” Andrew said.

Rachel Kaplan
Online Content Creator
Self-Employed
Rachel Kaplan has been an Ad 2 San Diego member for three months and all it took was attending a happy hour event. “I came to a happy hour event with a friend and met some great people so I decided to join.” Since then, Rachel has been an active Ad2SD member and is participating on not just one but two committees – Membership and Communications.
When asked what she enjoyed most about Ad2SD, Rachel said, “Meeting new friends with similar interests is fun. I like the educational events because I always seem to learn something new about the industry and the social events because I learn something new about people and friends.”
When Rachel’s not at an Ad2SD event, you can find her at the beach participating in water sports, traveling, hanging out with her new nephew and laughing with friends. Rachel adds, “I go to the beach all the time, wave running, wakeboarding, surfing – I’m bad at surfing, anyone want to give me a lesson? I also love to travel to Aruba, cook good food, read bad books and give hugs to strangers.”
On behalf of the Membership committee, we would like to thank both Andrew and Rachel for their hard work and commitment to Ad2SD. Be sure to give them a pat on the back when you see them at the next Ad2SD event.

The first 30 days of the American Advertising Federation’s Calendar has marked a very busy time for Ad 2. For this month’s President’s report, I have plenty of visuals to support what our club has been up to.

First, I represented Ad 2 as well as the San Diego Ad Club at the District 15 quarterly meeting. This took place on Saturday, July 25 near the Anaheim Pond. As much as I hate driving to Orange County on weekends, the district meetings always turn out to be a pleasure. We get to hear what the other clubs in District 15 (Orange County Ad Fed, AAF Palm Desert, AAF Inland Empire, AAF North La, AAF Santa Barbara, AAF Las Vegas and Ad 2 Orange County) are up to. We share ideas and best practices on how to better our region.

Then, on August 4, Ad 2 had our first official board meeting in the new office. This is a really posh facility located in the heart of Hillcrest. In the past, our monthy meetings have been scattered around San Diego. The old Ad 2/Ad Club office wasn’t the friendliest on the eyes or the most centrally located spot. Now, we have a beautiful home.
We were very excited to see long time Ad 2 member Chris Rothwell join us. Chris has been working over seas for Covario for the past 6 months and was home for a vacation.

A lot of Ad 2′ers took advantage of the special pricing for the Evening with Dan Wieden, presented by the San Diego Ad Club. These “Ad Legends” seminars are first class all the way. Food and drinks are included in the price and USD’s facilities are top notch.

San Diego Ad Club President Greg Joumas dug deep into Dan Wieden’s advertising legacy. Nike and Wieden + Kennedy have had a very long history and it was fun to hear how it all got started. Ironically, Greg was wearing Adidas shoes. After some baiting, Dan offered to make a $1,000 donation to the San Diego Ad Club if Greg gave him his shoes. Sure enough, Greg did.
I was very pleased to hear about Dan’s non profit Caldera. Caldera was formed to help under priviledged youth learn about the arts. They have a very interesting mentoring program that Ad 2 hopes to potentially model. We are working on starting an internship program that would fit into our diversity and multicultural initiatives.
This month, Ad 2 heads back to the NTC Promenade for our annual Cause Marketing/Public Service Kickoff event. Our last event at the NTC Promenade was in 2007 when we hosted Randy Snow of R&R Partners. Randy was the Creative Director behind the legendary “What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” campaign. The Promenade is a very beautiful facility and you will leave humbled after hearing 3 non profits compete for our annual public service campaign. Stay tuned for registration information.
Until then,
Adam Hermsdorfer
